For those who have had both engineered and solid hardwood flooring, which would say is more durable?
Since our downstairs was flooded out the other night, we need to get our wood floors replaced. I'm getting very opposing feedback with people being adamant that engineered wood is better and others are adamant that solid hardwood is better. Several have had BOTH types of flooring which leaves me a bit stumped.
I realize that 'better' is relative as it depends on what a person wants out of their flooring. We currently have engineered hardwood that was installed from the previous owners of the home. (I'd have to dig up the papers but I THINK they were installed 6-7 years ago??) There areas of the flooring where the thin (veneer?) peeled off and there are quite a bit of nicks and dents in it from items being dropped - mainly in the kitchen.
Aside from the aesthetics, we want it to be durable. We know that it's not going to be as durable as tile for instance but we'd like to get the most durable wood floors as we possibly can for the price. We don't want the cheapest for the sake of having wood floors and we don't live in a grand house so we don't want the top of the line but something that's of good quality for a fair, mid range price. To clarify, it would be going in our downstairs flooring, we know to avoid smooth flooring with a shine because it will show every flaw. We both want basic, handscraped floors. Thanks!
