When my cat had cancer last year, they paid thousands of dollars for his treatment. They don't argue about claims, they just pay them as long as you've turned in the required paperwork. The policy pays everything less your deductible (you can choose your deductible) and does not pay maintenance like vaccinations (I don't think any policies do). The annual limits are very high - in my case, $20K per cat. I've never gotten close.

SO GLAD I have insurance.Susan A. replied:Rocco has been covered by Pet Plan since he was 5 months old so he had no pre-existing conditions. Pet Plan covers illness and and injury. With Pet Plan you get to choose you deductible and reimbursement rate. Unfortunately I have had to use it when Rocco broke his leg and for a few other minor issues. Pet Plan did everything they said they would no issues in getting my reimbursement back if fact the day I got my credit card bill is the same day I received my Pet Plan check :)

I'm now seriously considering a company called Trupanion (no sales pitch-they've been fantastic to my friend) but when I 1st checked their website calculator for an estimate, I typed in Chessie and his age (6) the premiums seemed like a lot (twice what my friend pays for a 6 year old Doodle), but maybe that's the going rate for a Chessie? Any other companies folks recommend? Thanks so much for any advice!

Paul T. replied:We have had bad experiences with pet insurers messing us about etc. and in my opinion I think you get what you pay for. We are with pet plan which is way more expensive than other insurers but our vet says they never have any problems with them.

They also do not exclude for hereditary items. Years ago I had VPI. They were good for ear infections but everything else seemed to get excluded or ended up such a hassle that I gave up.
