  I snagged a 1BR condo in Alexandria across from Fairlington in the Bolling Brooks complex for $1200 last year, complete with W/D. Use homesdatabase.com, I was just able to find a few around that area in that price range.

  Yes it can be done. I live in north Old Town and have a small 2 br with W/D and pay $1825/mo so I'm sure you could find a 1 br in your price range nearby. I had the best luck with craigslist and the real estate websites like zillow.com and homesdatabase.com You're more likely to find a good deal through private owners than through a managed property.
