Company that installed it 10 years ago came out and charged me $354 to add 2lbs of R-410. That solved problem for about 1 week. Cooler weather set in though so figured I'd worry about it in the spring. Now with heat running the system is cutting totally off - no power to thermostat. Tracked that down to blown 5 amp fuse on circuit board in air- handler. Replaced and everything worked for about 24 hours then fuse blew again. Replaced again and fuse blew in 30 seconds. If you run out of freon, the heat strips will work, but they cost so much more electricity-wise. We had a leak that two companies patched two years in a row and we'd eventually run out before the winter ended and have humongous electric bills--my biggest was over $600! I finally called Mitchell's--they told me that I needed a new coil--it wasn't cheap, but it finally fixed the problem instead of paying for patching and new freon every season. http://www.mitchellhvac.com/ $350 for freon is not far from accurate if you're out
