Rather than stay overnight at the airport I'd like to stay in a hotel for the night. A bonus would be even to see the city at night, but not necessary (how close is the city center to the airport?).   There's a bus that goes directly from the airport to the city center for 5 euros. You can also take the metro, but there are 2 changes to get into the center. There are tonnes of little hostels and hotels in this area. I stayed at www.barbierihostel.com/. It was OK, it was 13 euros a night for a bed in a dorm of 6, but they have private rooms available too. They have free wifi, and will give you a detailed map of Madrid, as well as good tourist advice.
