Any metal or wood work artists in Austin looking for some part time help? I have recently decided to man up and start following my dreams and Something I've always wanted to do is build art from scratch or out of junk and put my garage to use. More specifically I am an electrical technician so I would really like to incorporate some lighting and wiring into my work. Something that inspired me was a lamp built out of an old typewriter i saw in a shop on SOCO. Other than a little welding and some plasma cutting I don't have much experience on the fabrication side but I get the basics. I would be very interested in being an apprentice and helping someone out (for free) in exchange for some experience and knowledge. I can only do evenings and weekends as I have a M-F job. South Austin preferred but will do some light commuting if need be. I know of things like ATX hackerspace but its just too far North. Thank you in advance!!!

As far as woodworking goes, Robert Galusha may still be around. I met him a few years ago and he gives lessons but maybe he has a place for some type of apprentice. He was a fun sort of guy - part of "old Austin" in my mind http://www.robertgalushadesign.com/award-winning-design.html He is rather proud of some chair designs. I met him at the woodworking group that meets at Woodcraft every month. Techshop is a place where you might network, too.
