Star is great. They waive all other atm fees when u are withdrawing from ur checking account. And they give u one free overdraft fee refund a year. Super easy banking. Been with them since 2007! Always very easy to deal with and I have used them in four cities.
Apologies in advance for such a stupid question, but I'm a total beginner. Had a sewing machine from my in-laws for my birthday, my mother-in-law has helped me make some curtains & I've made some cushion covers on my own. Mother-in-law lives hundreds of miles away & doesn't do quilting even though she's an experienced seamstress. I've tried advertising locally for a group or someone who can teach me to no avail. Can anyone on here recommend a very basic book for me? Thank you xxxx

Harriet hargrave has a series of books called quilters academy volumes 1 to 6, starts at the most basic and works up. I find them very informative, they can be downloaded to your Kindle or bought on hard copy. I got the Kindle version but would of been much better off buying the hardcopies.
Cindy S. replied:
You Tube videos and the Missouri Star videos are the best. Ask at your local fabric store or library if there are local quilting groups, even a Senior Citizens Center might have some information.
Rita K. replied:
When I first started quilting in the early 1990's there were several quilting shows on TV.....like Eleanor Burns, Kaye Woods, Sewing with Nancy, Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. ..that's how I learned, but I don't know if they are still on or not. Maybe check PBS to see if there's any on that channel. Otherwise, YouTube has several to get you started.
Rosa G. replied:
Start something with squares or local library might help. I went to library. You have Amazon too ;)
Mandy B. replied:
I'd look at you tube or Missouri star quilt company. There are loads of tutorials on there. Also just google what you want to make, say nine patch, or tote bag and lots of blogs have good tutorials. Pinterest is good too, links to loads of free tutorials.

Missouri Star Quilt Company Tutorials by Jenny Doan on You Tube. From start to finish how to make a quilt. Clear, detailed instructions in common English. See as well as hear how it works.
Julie A. replied:
Ditto Missouri Star Quilt tutorials. Do you have a quilt shop anywhere nearby? I've learned a lot from the various shops I've been into. My first quilt was just 12" blocks sewn together. Just make sure you get a 1/4" foot. I tried without it at first and it didn't yield great results. Enjoy the journey!
Pauline M. replied:
Quilt in a day by Eleanor Burns start with the Irish chain it's a simple but classic pattern
John T. replied:
Get the book Start Quilting by Alex Anderson. That gives you the basics you'll need and directions to keep alongside you.
Deb C. replied:
You have done straight stitching on the curtains. Quilting just has shorter seams. It will be learning where that quarter inch is that is the hardest part. There are you tubes on how to do that. You live in a great age to teach yourself with the computer as an aide. I learned from TV. My big hint would be to use starch or sizing on your fabric. It really helped me.
Annie S. replied:
Crafty Gemini was a great resource for me when I was getting started. I still refer to her YouTube videos when I need a refresher. Plus, I've met her, and she is every bit as sweet and fun in person as she is on video. She does all kinds of tutorials and projects, so you're sure to find something fun and informative. Good luck! Let us know how you're doing! π

Start out with a nine patch that teaches you to strip cut and match seems....Easy Quilts magazine is a great magazine from Fons and Porter...If there is any quilters in your area they likely shop where you do Also if you can get Jenny Doan at Missouri Star Quilts She simplifies everything Don't give up! Its not hard just remember for your blocks to fit you have to sew a 1/4" seam. If your machine didn't come with a 1/4" foot try to get one....makes life easier!

I learned by watching video tutorials by Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company and also by Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day. The tutorials are free and both of these women make learning how to quilt very easy. Personally, I really like the patterns by Eleanor Burns because her instructions are clear to me. Is there anyone in your area who give private lessons? Or do you have a local quilt shop that provides lessons for beginners? Those are good places to learn. :)

The quilter's academy series is great! Start with volume one. They are written by Harriet Hargreaves. Volume one walks you through a series of projects where you learn skills and by the end of the book, you will be able to draft out your own design.

I have been self taught by watching Eleanor Burns and Jenny Doan you tube videos and following many quilt bloggers online. Craftsy has a lot of free patterns and tutorials also. The internet has a wealth of information. McCalls has a couple of quilting magazines with good info. The best way to get started is to practice sewing consistent 1/4 inch seams.

I like the Missouri Star πQuilt Company. She uses a lot of pre cuts but you can buy fabric and cut into 10" squares and 2 1/2 strips. Her YouTube videos are very clear. This is the quilt we start our new quilters with. It called a JELLY ROLL race.

I started doing rag quilts and my love for quilting just grew. I've learned alot from these ladies but also watch many videos. My faves are Missouri star quilt company. They have great tutorials. Alot of my ideas come from seeing what others post and I just go with it. I am on my (technically) first block quilt now and it's a bit wonky but I'm proud. It's a learning process for sure. Trial and error and the love of it keeps me going. Best of luck to you!
