Traveling to Montreal soon. Need lodging recommendations. Preferably hostels or something cheap-ish and safe. Proximity to downtown (or a way to get there fairly easily) is a must. Thanks!

I've stayed in the [Lord Berri](http://www.lordberri.com/english/) a few times. It's a nice place, cheap, and it's right downtown (about 1 block away from Berri-Uqam subway station). You're walking distance to St-Denis, St-Catherine, and within 4-5 subway stops from anywhere else downtown you'd need to be (Rue Crescent, etc.,). I've never stayed in Hostels in Montreal as I've either been with a group that just got a room, or when I got a bit older and my GF and I could afford a hotel. I do have quite a bit of experience with hostels and one thing I'd say is just don't assume they'll be cheaper than a hotel. Often 2-3 people can split a hotel room for cheaper than a hostel.
