  I know you said no pho but Pho Grand is extremely popular and seemingly much beloved. Their menu is much deeper than just pho and you can certainly order family style although for what it's worth, I've heard from west coasters and people in LA/TX that it's hard to get really good Vietnamese food in NYC. I've really enjoyed eating here and my experience is from Vietnamese food in France where it's pretty popular but I'm far from a connoisseur. http://www.phograndny.com/
