Where can I find a legal codification or interpretation of what constitutes "damages" to a rental apartment? I am preparing to have to put up a fight to get my security deposit back from my landlord when I move out in a few months. I won't go into detail but after living here for a few years and being a good tenant our relationship has soured and he is being unreasonable about a lot of things and making threats to keep the deposit. Based on our lease he is entitled to keep all or part of the deposit if there are "damages" beyond wear and tear. I am having a hard time finding out more info about exactly what would be considered "damage" under the law. An excerpt from the legal code or other information would be helpful, can anyone point me in the right direction?

I don't have an answer to your questions, but I've heard of this lawyer that helps people recover their security deposits: http://www.dearslumlord.com/. I haven't used them personally but just read about them somewhere and thought that the idea was great.
Can anyone recommend a good housing lawyer in Brooklyn? I am having a difficult time determining my legal rights in regards to my rent stabilized apartment. I requested the history of rent (from DHCR) for my apartment and I see in 2012 that the RS apartment **doubled** in monthly rent! I am trying to determine if/why this is legal. I feel I have been overcharged the legally regulated rent for this apartment and I'd like to speak to a professional about it. Does anyone have a good lawyer they can recommend?
