Will be in Manhattan for my 40th b-day on 11/25, looking for italian restaurant recommendations. My wife and I will be in NYC this weekend to celebrate my birthday. Just curious if anyone could recommend a nice place to eat, preferably italian, but open for suggestions. Thanks.

[Rubirosa](http://rubirosanyc.com/) is probably my favorite restaurant in the city, might be too short notice for a reservation though. I also recommend: Zero Otto Nove http://www.089 nyc.roberto089.com/ Lil Frankies http://lilfrankies.com/ (cash only) Supper http://supperrestaurant.com/ (cash only) I've heard very good things about Quality Italian but haven't been yet http://www.qualityitalian.com/home.cfm

Look, 8bitViking. You're going to get a lot of bad advice in this thread. A lot. These are my Italian recs:
If you want the most luxurious Italian in the city, you want Del Posto. It will cost you a lot of money, but it will be very very good food and impeccable service.
If you want high-end but more classic Italian, take a look at Torrisi Italian Specialties. It will be hard to get reservations, but people absolutely love this place and it will be a memorable meal.
For a modern take on Italian food in a very posh/upscale setting, head to either location of A Voce. There is a spot in Columbus Circle and one near Madison Square Park. You will likely still be able to get a reservation at one of them. The food is incredible. The views are nicer at the Cbus Circle location.
A similar feel to A Voce is Ai Fiori, but the dishes aren't entirely Italian-focused. Think modern American/Italian. Very high-end, very good food/service. Great atmosphere.
Taking a small step down in price/fanciness is Lupa, in the West Village. Very solid offerings, rustic-style. Very energetic, sometimes slightly cramped dining room. Absolutely delicious food. Their minestrone soup is still the best soup I've ever had, period.
And for a more relaxed feel but excellent food, take a close look at Crispo. It's a great place for groups of people to share the fantastic/huge appetizer list. The Carbonara here is to die for. I bring out-of-town friends here a lot and it always impresses, but without a crazy price tag.
Other places listed in this thread that I totally get behind: Rubirosa (Pizza is crazy good), Lil Frankies/Supper (same owner, good/similar quality food in a fairly noisy/lively/energetic crowd. Often long waits at both and cash only)
Places listed in this thread that I can't support: Carmine's (really?)
