Want to see the major museums, zoo, botanical gardens, local history/architecture. We're both 50+ but we can still put in a full day walking. Should we rent a car, take taxis/metro, or plan on walking everywhere? also, any suggestions of what to see/do would be appreciated. EDIT: This is GREAT information everyone! Thank you! Now can someone recommend a really nice hotel with a nice view? $300/night is a little steeper than I'd like, but I also don't want a Motel 6. Thanks again! mredding replied:The only reason to rent a car is if you're heading out into the suburbs, places [EDIT: in the suburbs] where the CTA or Metra doesn't reach. The CTA and Metra both have websites to help plan your travel itinerary. Maps and time tables correlated with bus and train numbers. I would use that to plan as much as you can ahead of time. Since you're staying near the lake, hail a cab. Rent only if you're going out to the suburbs. [EDIT: Also a heads up: The Metra has two major hubs down town, both Union and Lasalle stations. If you go this route, make sure your on the right line at the right station.] Might I suggest a picnic in the [arboretum](http://www.mortonarb.org/)?
