  Demetris does fantastic work, is reasonably priced and local; he's done a few homes for me over the years: (416) 653-9268 / Demetris Floor Sanding. I would avoid all the engineered hardwood from the big box stores, once your heels/kids/dogs walk on it, it's toast. Go for natural wood, Red Oak is great, 3/4" thick, and stain it to your colour of choice (stain it light/natural and show no scratches!). That should run you $8-9 a ft installed.
