Fulking is a village and civil parish in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex, England. It is located on the north slopes of the South Downs, five miles (8 km) to the north-west of Brighton. The civil parish covers an area of 628.31 hectares (1,552.6 acres).
There is a country pub just outside the village, the “Shepherd and Dog” and beside it a spring, where the constant flow of water from the chalk strata gives rise to a small stream. Travelling uphill from the stream there is a public tap and horsetrough at the beginning of the street.
Walkers and ramblers know it a heaven for weary legs, hungry stomachs and a much needed drink. Locals and regulars warmly refer to it as their “second home”. Even across the pond a certain American travel guide advises its readers that “no trip to Britain is complete without spending some time in the original and beautiful country pub, The Shepherd & Dog.” Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, in the picturesque village of Fulking, this West Sussex landmark dates back to the 17th century.
Its knurled oak beams, wobbly walls and inglenook fireplace are a living and cosy testament to a quieter and less frantic period in our past. The Shepherd & Dog has maintained all the traditions you would expect in a country pub, but has added some lovely touches. The fabulous Sunday Roast on offer from noon until 8pm is just one example that will delight your taste buds. We look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you.
Hello, looking for some recommendations in Ditchling or surrounding area cozy pub or restaurant with great food (a bit outside of Brighton but worth the try). Thanks and happy Sunday
