Somewhere to splash out on dinner? So I've just found gainful employment (woot), and I'm planning on taking the missus out to celebrate next month. Now I've been a student the last 4 years, so I like to think I have a good repertoire of nice affordable restaurants around Central - but as the job comes with a little signing bonus, I though it'd be fun to splash out a bit and go somewhere we wouldn't normally.
I don't want to spend money just for the sake of it, though - the Bollinger and caviar can stay firmly put. Can anyone recommend a restaurant that's really worth a bit of extra expense?
Cheers!

La Trompette. http://www.latrompette.co.uk/ Fantastic food, wine by the glass, and won't break the bank. And by expense, give me your budget, and type of food you like.

The Ivy is rubbish - sorry borez but it's just a celeb hangout serving comfort food to people with more money than sense.
La Trompette is excellent, good choice Kear.
My suggestions are:
For steak : Goodman (3 locations, all good), get a good steak, the truffle chips and then fall into a food coma.
For Indian/Pakistani: Tayyabs (Whitechapel) Get the lamb chops, seekh kebabs, tinda masala, dry meat and naans, and then die happy.
For Chinese: If you're willing to travel a bit, Silk Road in Camberwell for dumplings, torn cabbage and lamb skewers. If not, Chilli Cool in Bloomsbury. Get the pigs intestines and fish hot pot.
For fancy high-end: The Ledbury, in Notting Hill. Lovely staff, lovely room and the food is always the best. They're going through a transition period at the moment with the acquisition of a new test kitchen and new development chef but if anything that just means it's going to get even better.
For no-holds-barred decadent mentalosity: Bob Bob Ricard, Soho. Get caviar, vintage vodka and a lobster burger. Then cry at the bill.
For the best burgers in the word: MeatLiquor, Bond St. You'll have to queue (unless you get there doors open) but they ARE worth it. Get the buffalo chicken burger too, and the buffalo wings.
For lobster (yes, slightly niche market but still): Burger & Lobster, Mayfair. Again, no bookings so get there early but their lobster roll is a work of fucking art.
For experimental modern British - Roganic in Marylebone. Again quite pricey but the most perfect example of high-end British food in 2012. And with lovely informal service.
I can't think of another category, so I'll stop. But I'd be happy to answer any questions or give more suggestions. Ask away.
