Considering a move to Birmingham r/Birmingham, I am thinking of moving to Birmingham from New Orleans, in part to be closer to family. I have visited them several times and have always enjoyed my visits but find myself thinking that I would not fit in in my brother's world. He lives in Mountain Brook, if that is helpful. It seems like a very safe, pretty community, but I'm not really in at a strollers and polos and pedicures and playdates point in my life. I have to imagine that other worlds exist in Birmingham, but I've never gotten to see them.
Are any of you mid-20s non-married folk? Ever been to New Orleans and gotten a feel for the kind of frayed-around-the-edges slightly funky culture down here? I'm wondering if any of this can be found in Birmingham and if so, what kind of neighborhood/restaurant/community center/bar recommendations you might have.
Sorry to be long-winded, I would really appreciate any insight at all!

Hey, hit me up if you need a restaurant job, I work at a pretty nice place in town. I also have a badass realtor who has apartments all over downtown Birmingham. I pay $525 for a 2 bedroom apt that's 5 blocks from the center of the city, with some great running routes. [In my opinion, this is the best bar in town.](http://jclyde.com/) Oh, and I just left New Orleans on Wednesday for a quick visit. I still stand firm in my view that I've never met a person from Louisiana that I didn't like.

Birmingham's got its good side and its bad side. I'd suggest living somewhere in Southside or Highland. Highland is safer and prettier than most of Birmingham, and I've really liked living there over the past few years.
If you're into drinking, I really dig the Upsidedown Plaza and Stillwater. The Plaza is the oldest bar in town, and it's my favorite dive bar. It does get smokey in a lot of bars in town because indoor smoking is still legal here. If you like live music, then Stillwater has live music 7 nights a week and no cover. The Botteltree Cafe has some of the best shows in town, though.
Restaurants...Camp Taco, Pop's Neighborhood Grill, The J. Clyde (great beer selection, too), and Rojo are all great places to grab some food at a pretty reasonable buck.
