Whether you lived there or not, they know how much electricity was used at that address and make a projection and based on your credit, they come up with a down payment. So.... that might change from provider to provider, but if it is high will probably be on the high side no matter who you choose. I saw someone posted the Power to choose site. That will be your best bet. Just see what rates you like, then call or apply online and see what down payment. But... the down payment in most places is given back after 12 months of good pay. So... you will get it back WITH interest later on if you pay on time most of the 12 months.

Janet C. replied:just do your research on power to choose's website. i wouldn't do a variable rate. and be careful on contract terms. make sure to look at the different fees listed in the detailed info because some of them have significant fees that really add up. For example, the only fee that I pay is $10 if I don't use 1000/kwh/month. I don't pay any other fees. So with that fee, my rate is $.09/kwh (9 cents, lol).
