My ancient sewing machine crapped out and I need a new one. Any suggestions as to brand or model? I mostly use it to hem clothes and repair things. I would like it to be heavy duty enough to sew denim and maybe leather. Thanks

I was a hard-core Singer person until I bought one in recent years. The old ones were rockin'. The new ones, not so much. I have a Husqvarna now and Kat has a Janome. There is a fabulous sewing machine place in Walnut Creek; they are great. http://www.sewingmachineshop.com/ Aug 5, 2013

The auto-threader on the Brother sent me over the edge. My new fancy Janome ($2700) from the Sewing Machine Shop has assisted threading and assisted threading works well! I have 25 year old ($200) Janome I was very happy with that my daughter still uses. I have a HuskyStar 219 (about $250 7-8 years ago) that I like a lot. If you want to sew leather you need an industrial machine - more like a Juki which SMS also sells. Good luck. A lot of people like Pfaff and Bernina which are sold by The Cotton Patch in Lafayette. They are lovely machines - but pretty much every foot and accessory are a separate purchase from the machine itself.

I bought my last machine at the Sewing machine shop in walnut creek. Marian and I avoid the concord store on treat cause he is a crook. I have an older Husqvarna and also Brother. I sew leather and denim on both. Just use the needles that are for that purpose. Yes, Singer sucks. Marian got her last awesome machine at Concord Joann's and she loves the ladies there. Good luck. By the way, all are cheaper in Reno. One machine we wanted is $3000 cheaper here than at the walnut creek store
Anyone want to recommend a place to take a Viking sewing machine for a tune-up -- hopefully within easy driving distance of Sacramento? I have one of the old sturdy all-metal models that I bought...
Not exactly easy to reach from Sac'to, but very good I took my 1977 Viking to the Sewing Machine Shop in Walnut Creek at the beginning of 2005, essentially dead, and got it back good as new for a coupla hundred clams. (Among its other problems, the plastic in the cam driver had split like drying mud, which drove up the price ) You can see the place at http://www.sewingmachineshop.com/. - Hilary Powers - hilary@... - Oakland CA
