This is much cheaper and much more fun... No mad obstacles, just lots of mud and laughs.. Local too!! http://www.majorseries.com/ I've done this three times now and I'm already booked for October.. Give it a go and then do mudder if you're really keen, it will give you a starting point to evaluate your times etc too!!

one thing I will Say Caroline, do your run training on the kind of ground your events are likely to be on, If you're going to do Tough Mudder UK or The Major Series you want to be doing lots of cross country through woods, hills, etc. keep off the tarmac! you can always tell the road runners when it comes to mud runs - bambi on ice springs to mind! I know some great off road routes around here and eastbourne way, some nice 5 k through to 10-12 k, not very muddy at the moment though!
