Can I direct you to a very good Facebook group of a vet called Chris Pearce who often highlight the issues he finds which other "equine dentists", EDTs and vets have made. I'll let you make your own mind up as to who is doing this most shoddy work, the most damage and taking the most money which they are not qualified to take... so there is an element of value for money here. Your "dentist" might be cheaper but not in the long run if they over rasp the teeth and cause them to die (seen this more times than you could imagine), miss a fractured tooth, miss a decaying tooth, etc... so please think about it carefully. EDTs absolutely have their place and I support and work with good ones, but there is also a place for a good vet with dental experience and interest to be involved too. Use both of you want, they can work together for you. But please do not use an unqualified person - they must be a member of the BAEDT or WWAED!! And they must have insurance otherwise you have nothing to claim on if they mess up! For those who have used vets who are not keen or experienced in teeth, then please use another vet! They should admit if it's not their area of interest and most do recommend a colleague who does this work. Just like you might take you lame horse to someone who likes and sees a lot of lamenesses rather than one who doesn't like that work and concentrates on stud work or something. While most vets on the road are like GPs we all (including human GPs) have strength and weaknesses. It's the way humans are!

I would never have a vet always a registered dentist like Andrew Gardner. Vets may be able to sedate etc but as someone who has family who are equine vets they have told me themselves as well as other vets they only do a small amount of time on the teeth (unless you want to specialise in the jaw and teeth). Whereas a fully qualified and registered equine dentist will have 3 years plus a further top up year if they wish on just the teeth/jaw. I don't know how people can say a vet is more qualified to do horses teeth. Always look at baedt.com for the full list of registered dentists.

As long as the dentist is on the BAEDT register, they're good. You do not need to sedate a horse to do a proper job at all.

I understand using a gag on foals holds a risk to damage the developing cheek muscles, I would wait until they are at least 2yrs old. However checking for very wonky/displaced teeth, extra or missing baby teeth that may affect with how the adult teeth come through and generally handling a little one is all good practice. Many feel there is not a need to do much to baby deciduous teeth as they will be replaced by adult teeth very shortly, it is however good practice to inspect that process happen regularly than try and intervene when its too late. Using a BEVA/BAEDT, WWAED category 2 qualified EDT or BEVA dentistry qualified vet generally means they have fulfilled the high standard of work to pass stringent practical exam, are able to get full malpractice insurance and should something go wrong you have an Association to complain to and have their workmanship inspected. All good reasons to research who it is your using. And reference the power tool vs hand floats. All I will say is the BAEDT / BEVA bunch also need to be able to do decent dentistry with both hand floats and power tools and now I believe ambidextrous.

Qualified dentists charge the same as unqualified ones !! Any good dentist will have no problem showing you a copy of their insurance and qualifications if you ask them, but I'd their name isn't on the baedt list I wouldnt use them

Thank you for the recommendations. You can find all the UK qualified cat 2 dental technicians in the area on either the wwaed or the baedt. On both these registers there is also the students who are working towards there exams this is on a student page on the baedt or it won't have cat 2 after there name on the wwaed. All of these dentists work towards a strict code of conduct and are fully insured many thanks marcus

The only exams that are recognised by vets and DEFRA in this country are BEVA and WWAED. All students members who are undertaking courses, training, practical or written exams are listed on both of the associations websites. All those who have gone on to become members have passed the rigorous exams theory and practical and maintained the continued professional development, also have FULL malpractice indemnity insurance. To take this category II exam and pass you have to be proficient using power tools, what you choose to use after this is each persons choice, but to sit the exam it is a criteria NOT a choice. Any EDT who attends any courses or training other than through the BAEDT & BEVA or WWAED is NOT recognised and claims that these make them qualified / registered are incorrect. Everyone can be a category 1 EDT, only those who have passed the BEVA or WWAED exam are category 2 qualified and Vets by default are category 3 qualified. Kerry Avis hope this helps.

Might I just say that the BAEDT list isn't all its cracked up to be. I've had to make complaints about several of their dentists work. They employ 2 people just to deal with complaints. I suggested doing spot checks instead of just having a member accompanied on a set day, as obviously you're going to do good work when someone's looking over yr shoulder, but they don't have the manpower apparently. If you're on the baedt list, then you've undertaken the beva qualification which promotes power tools. These can be a nightmare even in 'trained' hands. dentists can be fully qualified without being on the register. Admittedly there are some really bad dentists out there but not everyone is good on the register either!

I reiterate some of the above comments terrifying how anyone can pick up a rasp and call themselves an equine dentist. I have dealt with first hand the problems caused by an unqualified dentist. Caused the horse to rear, go over backwards and injure the rider. All because its teeth were razor sharp and not done properly. Bee sorted teeth horse now amazing .

What I don't understand is when you google qualified equine dentists it come up with a list of BAEDT members who are qualified and recognised by the BEVA and BVDA. There are very few names on this list I recognise.... Is there another list I've not found?

Kathryn Woolley there are about 140 uk qualified guys and gals made up of BAEDT/BEVA and WWAED Category 2 EDTs. There are literally 20 or so who have passed either associations exams but are no longer members of said associations (could be due to a few factors like not completing CPD, being struck off or just not wanting to join the associations)

we use Mary-Jo Grant, that is area dependant. like farriers you will find one on http://www.baedt.com/ we had a really bad experience with someone who was totally fabulous but is not on the register. Remember if your horse is insured then you should use a registered dentist as a pal found ou when she took her horse to the vet for a cracked tooth and the insurance wouldnt cover as she had been dealt with by a non registered person.

HI Natalie Baxter, firstly worth checking out www.baedt.com the website of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians or www.wwaed.com the Worldwide Association of Equine Dental Technicians. The benefit of using a these only 2 UK recognised qualification in dentistry is a) you know they have passed the stringent standards and b) should you have any issues or not be happy with their work you have a body to complain to. What I will say is don't be put off by the longer lead times, EDTs, like tradesman, if busy means they are sought after, repeat business speaks for itself, better to wait than regret. If someone tells you they are studying towards qualifying you can also verify this as the websites have student pages listing all those bettering themselves. The BAEDT also have a facebook page. Just because someone travels the work doing dentistry does not mean they are qualified........... there are many many rogues out there.

Kimberley Branson. You can find UK qualified EDTs either under www.wwaed.com or www.baedt.com websites. A benefit of using a member of these two organisations is they have met the stringent standards of work required to pass their exams and if you were unhappy with their work you have somewhere to complain to, using unqualified you have no come back at all. Even their student members (training towards the exam) are listed. They all have full malpractice (as well as the usual 3 rd party liability insurance) cover which insurance companies look for. The British Association of Equine Dental Technicians also have a facebook page.
