I will only address the technologies and the companies that offer them in this area. They are listed in the order of preference (my opinion) on the technology not the company customer service or anything else. Note that the demand for internet has become heavier as time as gone. It is not unusual to have several devices hooked into your internet service at the same time. The TV may be streaming Netflix. Your children with each phone may be watching youtube videos. All of these activities put a straign on the internet you have coming into the house. If you have a 1MB connection coming into the house and three devices are streaming videos...it will slow down and give your problems. Also...the Federal Communications Commision made a classification earlier this year this year that in order for companies to classified as "broadband" they have to offer a 25mb/3mb connection. That being said, option #1 below is the only service in the area that is considered broadband. One more note. I have been looking into carrying a wireless service in the area that guarantees speed that you pay for. That is different than #4 below and it a little more expensive but if you pay for 5mb/3mb...that is what you will get anytime. More to come as I negotiate details. These are just the basics of my experience in this area. The bottom line is that we are limited on the services that are available to us. There is no glaring, "This is the best service around!" solution. There are a few variables (budget, location, bandwidth needs, etc.) involved to determine what works best for your application. 1. Fiber (NOANET is the wholesaler) - http://www.noanet.net/ * Pros: Is very fast and is not as affected by local internet traffic. * Cons: Very expensive. If fiber is close to your location, you have to pay to get it run into the location. As an example of cost, I had a business that wanted to splice off of the fiber. It was $7000 to run the new line about 10 feet and then a 5 year contract at about $150/month for a 10mb/10mb connection. 2. DSL (Centurylink) - http://www.centurylink.com/home/internet/ * Pros: Dedicated phone line that is isolated just to the customer. The internet may slow slighlty but it has more to do with internet congestion will affect any technology. Besides fiber, it is one of the fastest that is available to the Ritzville area. No limits on data and Centurylink has told me that they do not throttle speeds for high data users. * Cons: Currently Centurylink only offers 10mb/768kb service. It is no where near what speeds they offer in other areas of the state and country. I have been told many times that there are no plans to upgrade the speeds due to infrastructure issues in the area. DSL is also limited by how far your location is from the phone hub. The further away, the decrease in available speed and if you are too far out...you cannot get DSL service. For what you pay in this area, you are not getting the equivalent service as you would outside the area. 3. Cellular (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, etc.) * Pros: The speeds that are offered over wireless have significantly increased over the past few years with Verizon offering LTE speeds. The portability and coverage is also outstanding and you have the option of using your phone/tablet to tether other devices to it in remote locations. * Cons: Cost. Cost. Cost. Data from cellular carriers is very expensive and your are capped at the amount of data you pay for. If you are on a 5GB plan and you and the kids stream movies, stream music, download large files, etc. That data allotment will get used up very quickly. The technology also has a limitation in that the more people that are linked into the tower you are linked in to, speeds may be affected. 4. Wireless Service (Spectrum most common) - http://www.sosml.net/ * Pros: Wireless service offers a 10mb/10mb connection. Price is fair for the area. The type of technology allows people outside of town to get internet service. * Cons: Unfortunately, Spectrum states on their website, "Maximum rates are not guaranteed and can be affected during hours of peak usage.". This has definitely been the case as during peak hours in the AM and PM, speeds drastically dip from the 10mb speed to timing out when getting on websites and not being able to gain access. This is constant complaint that I get from local customers. Part of the issue is how data is purchased and the other part is the technology. When a radio is on a tower, the more people that point to it and are using it, the more that those customers will be affected and experience slower speeds. For some, another con is the startup cost, as you will have to pay $300 as a new customer, and $150 as an old RCI customer to upgrade your current equipment. 5. Satellite (Hughsnet) - http://www.hughesnet.com/plans-and-pricing/internet-service * Pros: Accessibility to remote areas is great. There are several areas in the area that this is the only available option. Speeds are reasonable for the limitations of access given. * Cons: When you stop and think about it, the data is being delivered via satellite. Data has to travel from your dish to a satellite. When I have checked 'ping' speeds over the years (the amount of time that a packet of data travels to the location and back) it tends to be slow because of distance. Typical ping speeds for a DSL connection are about 30ms. With satellite, they can range from 400ms to 3000ms. Hughsnet limits how much data you can use in a month. From their website fine print, "Speeds are not guaranteed. Monthly Data Allowance is the sum of the Anytime and Bonus Bytes. Actual speeds during the Bonus Byte period will likely be lower than speeds indicated." 6. Cable (Northstar Cable) - http://www.northstarbroadband.net/lineupsandpricing/ritzville.html * Pros: It runs through existing coax cable connections, which most people have into their location. * Cons: Offered speeds are below average compared to other larger areas. Price is a little bit expensive for what you are getting. It runs into some of the same limitations as wireless service in that the more people in the area, on the same cable network, that are using the internet, the slower is becomes. It is a technological limitation.

They do not provide emergency outage service on nights and weekends, which I cannot understand with a service company. Internet went out at 5:00 pm on Friday and their auto response is they will get back to us the next business day. We had Centurylink before that, which doesn't have the speed out here. Many options out there are skimp on internet and we'd be relegated to satellite or cell. If you have used it, what companies, when and what were your experiences? They will cut your speed if you use too much unless you spend an absurd amount of money on their highest speed. We now just use our phones thru US cellular. I couldn't justify the amount of money hughes wanted. If you go verizon make sure you are getting a strong signal where you live. (only DSL, Vernonia does not have FiOs) If where you live is able to get that, that is what you should go with (IMO). We recently moved out of the Frontier Internet service area and had to go with Satellite internet so we did the bundle with Dish.Net. It is contracted with Hughes.net. The internet service is pretty much what we expected after doing some research. (but it's all that is available!) After you use up your allotted GB, you still have a connection but the speed is GREATLY reduced. We chose the 10 GB bundle and with 4 of us in the household it took us about 10 days to use up the 10 GB. You can buy 10 additional GB at $10 for each 10 GB. With Dish.net I am able to log in to my account and keep track of how many GB we have left. It's expensive to have service out in the country like $60-80 a month. We had Hughesnet and it was too slow. I wouldn't recommend our current ISP either the speed isn't great either.
