  Unless you are going the electric vehicle route, look for a vehicle with "PZEV", or partial zero emmisions. Looks like Subaru has several SUVs that rate PZEV. I have a car from Hyundai (Elantra Limited) and love it. It gets around 35 mpg highway and closer to 29 mpg city here in hilly PA. Not sure if any Hyundai SUVs rank PZEV or not.   We looked at the Highlander, Nissan CX9, Pilot, Chevy Traverse & Outback. There were pluses/minuses to them all but we ended up with the Highlander and I'm happy with it. I have a consumerreports.com account, let me know if you want the password to research.
