"I don't know how to get the drive back in him like he had in school. "We do Saxon Math, Apología for Science, LLATL, Mystery of History. He has an A average for Math, but all his other stuff goes in one ear and out the other and he doesn't seem like he retains anything..   I am totally in Amy VR's camp! You really are in charge here, involve him in making a schedule for each subject with alloted times on how to get through it all by years end. I highly recommend the book Planning Your Charlotte Mason Education found on Simplycharlottemason.com. Even if you aren't a CM'er, this book would help ANYBODY. It's amazing. Since employing this method of scheduling, I haven't had a bumpy year. YET, lol My kids have timeslots to finish their work, if they waste my time, then they waste their time at the end of the day, AKA, homework. If they are consistantly falling behind, re-evaluate, maybe there isn't enough time allowed, too much work given, etc. I do let my kids pick their curriculum (within parameters, of course) I narrow to two choices I feel is best and let them choose which one for most subjects. Some of course aren't optional and they just have to do it. It's a growth opportunity, lol! Best wishes, pray your way through this, God has the full knowledge of your situation and He is faithful!

  Also, before I forget, it is my opinion that you would like what is called Charlotte Mason style teaching most. It focuses a lot of "living books" aka not textbooky and hands-on learning and observation with journals of what you're learning and projects. Check out http://simplycharlottemason.com/. I may be wrong, but I thought at least some of it would interest you.

  We used Learning Language Arts Through Literature. It was very gentle and Charlotte Mason style. Another good option would be to check out simplycharlottemason.com She has some inexpensive e-books for language arts and some free resources! amblsideonline.org is a free Charlotte Mason style curriculum for all grades birth-12 th grade. queesnhomeschooling.com has some great inexpensive items in the Charlotte Mason style too. Charlotte Mason believed in gentle short focused lessons. She believed that a child should not be asked to do something alone that they cannot do perfectly, therefore, work with them until they are capable of doing it on their own. Once they can expect perfection at that task. It doesn't take long to do the daily lessons, they are interesting (she said that textbooks were "twaddle" and wasted children's time, so she advocated using "living" books. Real books that are interesting because children actually learn when it is enjoyable.), fun for both mom and student. My kids did very well using this type of education. Both graduated homeschool high school and have since graduated college.
