I'd like for them to attend home school classes one a week so they get classroom time and I'd also like to participate in home school groups in the area for socialization, field trips, etc... Any recommendations? I am also not sure where to start for curriculum... I am a total newbie to homeschooling! I'd like something that is more "hands on" with lots of activities rather than being mostly workbook stuff. Is there a curriculum that anyone would recommend? TIA!!!
Wendy T. replied:We love My Father's World curriculum-- very hands-on, lots of literature, easy to follow lesson plans for mom and very reasonably priced. A great place to start for curriculum is the book "100 Top Picks for Homeschoolers" by Cathy Duffy (check your local library system-- many have it). It is a review of some of the most well known curriculum on the homeschool market-- and while that part of her book is good, the BEST part is that before she begins her reviews, she has a test for you to take for yourself and for your kids that will steer you in the direction of what your teaching style might be and what their learning style might be. Then you can use that information to begin to narrow down curriculum options. Because there are SO VERY MANY! Homeschoolclassifieds.com website is a great resource for finding used curriculum. I would also highly recommend attending one of the Georgia homeschool conventions (there is one in June in Duluth and one in July in the Marietta/Vinings area)-- at least visit the vendor hall so you can get hands-on any curriculum you are interested in. Check ghea.org (state homeschool organization) or even google for classes/groups/co-ops in your area...
