Any recommendations for ashtanga yoga teacher training courses with a distance learning element? Single working parent so need flexible childcare friendly teaching options and somewhere commutable from Guildford surrey...

Hi Ruth, a BWY TT course will only give you a general yoga teaching qualification. It will not offer Ashtanga training, neither will it qualify you to teach authentic Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Have you considered John Scott's teacher training, which is closely allied to Mysore, and has the benefit of being based in Europe. You could contact Scott Johnson at Stillpoint Yoga London to chat about this - he trained with John and Lucy Scott and now runs the SYL ashtanga yoga studio in London. But the BWY? No. It will take large chunk of your time - 3 years - an even larger chunk of your money - circa £3 k - and not take you any closer to your goal - teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

I'm not being "negative" in the slightest... (unless you view alternative opinions to yours based on experience and concensus - 'negative' ) But it would be bad advice to suggest that the BSY could be a viable option in this instance.. Unless it was layered over local teacher, self practice and yes, if not Mysore then time spent with one of the senior teachers, in this country John Scott or one of his teachers ... I agree with Clare, it's one of the few forms that does NOT churn out loads of inexperienced and maybe dangerous teachers... But as with all training, caveat emptor and all that, we all choose according to circumstances.. My first teacher was David Swenson's VHS...

Norman Blair and Melanie Cooper run an astanga and yin training. Melanie also runs astanga trainings. John Scott teacher trains. But I agree with Abby. Apprenticeship is the way to go and then supplement with trainings.

Hi Ruth...I'm an Authorised Ashtanga teacher based in Reading...there really are no short cuts. It sounds like you have a great foundation but really Ashtanga is a daily practice and this is where you teach from. I know your time is limited but this is the starting point. However if I were to recommend any course it would only be Melanie cooper and Norman Blair's or John Scott's. joey is amazing but i imagine thats his is more an immersion that a training. if you ever get a chance come and see us in Reading Xx
