We had our German shepherd before we had our "monkey". Monkey came home 2 weeks before our GSD turned 1. With the right training, supervision and discipline of both GSD and child you should have no troubles. Good luck in your search. My boy came from a registered breeder, with papers and my breeder chose the pup for us from what our lifestyle was and what she saw in the temperament of each pup in litter. She was spot on. It is best to do your research but in saying that if a rescue pup becomes available or even a senior and you are willing to give it a loving home that would be great.
