Can anyone recommend a good, affordable dog trainer who uses positive training methods, please? Our Bichon is a rescue and is scared of men. He's so reactive that if a man walks past us on the street, he growls and tries to make eye contact with them, if they look at him and smile (a lot do, he's a cutie) he'll bark aggressively and raise up on his hind legs, trying to jump at them. We've had him a year now and tried our best to have him meet lots of our male friends and have positive experiences with males, but it hasn't made much difference - he accepts men who come into our home by barking at them every time they stand up but sitting on their lap when they sit down. He's very odd. I've reason to believe he was hit when he was younger as he's terrified of anyone holding a rolled up umbrella, a walking stick or crutches. My dad picked up an umbrella at Christmas time and Ralph ran and hid behind the couch, whining. He's never bitten anyone but he'll behave as if he's going to, last week was the final straw when we had to rearrange his dental operation because the vet doing it was male and he was apparently too reactive to sedate and do the operation safely. I'm at the end of my tether, any information from other dog owners would be appreciated.
