Thanks in advance for any help!!James S. replied:Chameleons are generally a "look, don't touch" sort of lizard--yes, I've seen a couple who were OK with climbing on people but that is the exception. Most of them truly hate it and find it stressful: if you want a lizard that tolerates a lot of interaction and petting, look for something else. Veiled, Jackson's and panther chameleons are probably the hardiest and are widely captive-bred. There are on-line reptile-specific sites, there's also kingsnake.com which has classifieds for breeders and dealers, some of them within driving distance. Since different species require different conditions, research which species you want. They generally need a diet with as much variety as you can manage--just crickets won't cut it--and a tank is not the best environment: screen cages permit a better air exchange, which chameleons seem to do best with, as opposed to a tank. (People do use tanks, but in my experience and others', screen cages work better.) These vary in price depending on size. They are also extremely antisocial--house alone, adult males shouldn't even see each other, preferably. Good luck.
