  Do your research at Sword Buyer's Guide, then shop wherever. There's a lot of guys on there that do reviews that suggest Kult of Athena. But I just look for the reviewed sword wherever I can find it.

  I have a Pakistani knife (~12"), vendor forgotten; a pattern-weld leaf blade dagger I got from an SCA smith at Pennsic in 1990, and a skean dhu that's not really dhu at all - rosewood handle and pattern-weld copper and stainless blade (smith unknown) that I bought from a friend's esoteric shop in Dallas when she was shutting it down. Kult of Athena is very good. A lot of Pakistani, Indian, and Chinese stuff is pretty decent (Windlass, Hanwei, etc.). The best stuff is usually from knife makers you'll find at craft shows and medieval events. However, so is some flashy but trashy stuff. It's best to get some standard but serviceable pieces first, learn what makes a good dagger or knife good, then save up for something really nice from a high quality cutler.
