  I need a tutor for Lake desperately. Any idea's on who would be good for this and how much they cost? I am thinking it would be ideal for someone who is in school themselves like college or high school a few times a week for an hour or two at a time. He is struggling horribly and is refusing to do work in class and doesn't understand any of it. We have already held him back in kindergarten once and he will have to go into first grade no matter where his level is at. I have him do home work at home with me and he has zero desire to do any of it. Give him a computer and he is a little genius. He is so into bugs and animal's, the ocean and many thing's but you talk to him about math or spelling and he is outta there.

  I have a question for you all... I'm getting divorced, we've been in the process for several months, I was out of my house for 4 months and now got it back through temporary orders since my youngest daughter (the only living with me now) is special needs and the house has a lift and modified bathroom. My lawyer just told me she can't continue working in my divorce since I have no money to pay for it, I have a bakery that I'm struggling so bad to survive and have to pay rent and mortgage for the house, bills here and bills at the house and I just can't make it! Do you know of a lawyer or a lawyer firm who can help me (like a community help) I need to be done with this and he left all our credit cards that we both had but were on my name and still have to pay for that. Sorry for displaying my private life but I'm desperate and I know you may be able to help...

  I don't know how severe your son's needs are, so I don't know what the placement will be. As far as whether the public school will "recommend" the public school, the legal standard is that the child be in the "least restrictive environment." For a ch ild who is deaf, that may be a school for the hearing-impaired, while a child with a mild learning disability may be able to be in the regular classroom full-time with some services brought into the classroom. I imagine that your charter school is already the least restrictive environment (otherwise you wouldn't want to keep him there), and you would make that argument at an IEP meeting. HOWEVER, the IEP team could still determine that a public school is the least restrictive environment where he could get the support needed. If that is in the IEP, the charter school would probably be required to drop him. (You could still homeschool; whether the public school would give him services depends then on state law and your district.) I'd suggest that if you haven't already, get a private evaluation and talk to the evaluator about what he needs and what your options are for getting services through the school district as opposed to private-pay. Also look at wrightslaw.com for information on special education law.

  Out of District Placement "Does anyone have experience fighting a school system to have your child placed in a private school. We are about to go to my sons iep meeting Thursday. He has not progessed hardly at all in the 4 years he has been in school. We are petitioning them to send him to a private autism school. I have heard some places that the state (we are in va) will give you an advocate but I can't find any information on that. A lawyer is super expensive. I will do it if I have to but I want to hear others experiences! Thanks!"

  Anyone here have a child in the Bentonville School system getting appropriate therapy for dyslexia? My son, who is now in 6th grade, was put on an IEP in 1st grade for speech and literacy but minimal progress through the years. We had him screened independently this last spring and he has moderate-severe dyslexia so we are now trying to get his IEP adjusted and the right therapy secured with resistance at the middle school level so I'm looking for help & advice from others in the district.   Add- immediatly have him removed from any and all reading programs or methods that do not qualify as being appropriate for dyslexia no matter how wonderful the school claims the teacher is. Refer to the IDA-International Dyslexia Associations qualifications for Teachers of Reading. Also anytime Google wrightslaw.com and search their site for info.

  Wrightslaw.com is a great resource. Call http://www.matrixparents.org/ and ask who has the Parent Training Grant for Lake County. When you get that name call them and ask if they have any parent advocates or what help they have for you. It doesn't h urt to go to the superintendents office and talk to them about the issue you are having, too, just so they are aware of what is happening. I'd offer to help by I don't have any experience with the new laws, even though I did it for over 15 years ago.

Currently, his public school does NOT have a sign language certified Instructer or anyone who is competent in sign. And they do NOT have anyone iPad knowledgable either so, no one their knows how to communicate with him effectively. We're filing with the department of education on Friday and were suing them for an out of district placement. We've had many other issues with the district over the last few years. Suing is our last resort,but very necessary. My question is this, I'm considering suing for discrimination as well. Why is every other child allowed to communicate in school and he is not? Isn't this a violation of his rights?? I need a different attorney for this as well. Any advice or help would be so helpful. We live in Massachusetts. Thank You

  Your friend needs to find an advocate and also familiarize herself with IDEA and the law. Public schools do not have a choice in educating the disabled and they should not be giving her such a hard time. The school can not make a medical decision, like ear tubes.
