I still have a realistic Navaho base station and a couple of cobra mobile units. But I would like to get into ham radio, but don't have a clue as to rules, regulations, or what , equipment to purchase. Is there somewhere to go and learn the basics? And what type of equipment do you all suggest to getting started?

  I can highly recommend hamtestonline.com. It runs you through the test and has links to the information, theory, etc behind the questions. It is not free, but the way it works is it tracks your knowledge and reinforces the topics you are weak on. If not hamtestonline, there are others out there that are similar, jut pick one and spend an hour or so each night on it instead of watching TV until you are comfortable with the subject matter.   I recommend www.hamexam.org for practice. They have flash cards and ability to drill on your weak sections. The Technician class I teach in Davison also just finished this month. Not sure what book you have, but I use the Gordon West series. He has an audio set that I model my class after.

  Tyler, a little off-topic, but I wanted to weigh in on studying for the exam. For me, I always approached the exams as more of a "memory test" than anything else. I used hamtestonline.com to pass my Extra Class exam (on 9-11-14), but hamexam.org is also good (and it's free, as mentioned). I recommend this approach to people who are interested in getting a license. Once you pass the exam, THEN go back and study the material. You'll already have learned a pretty good chunk of the vocabulary words and phrases, so that will make the actual comprehension easier. As for the mobile rig, I prefer a nice dual-band rig, with a good antenna.

  hamexam.org is a great free website you register with and it will track your progress and keep testing you where you are weak while keeping a few questions in there that your strong in. Excellent site.

  Mary this is a good place to start, they have free online practice tests. There are also alot of study books and tapes available the first license these days is the Technician class which doesn't require learning morse code just electronic theory and some Amateur Operator rules. http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/

  http://www.hamtestonline.com is a fabulous study site! There is a fee, but you can get a deal by combining several levels. I used them to study for my Extra Class test and was ready in plenty of time. Best of luck David

  HamExam.org flash cards are what Ive used and they are awesome plus theyre free. Also, if you have a smartphone, you can access the mobile version for free as well. Tracks every answer youve made (right or wrong) and keeps asking you the questions until you get them right. Ive recommended this site to numerous people who have used it to get their tickets and they all swear by it as well. Joel W4JOL

I liked how it let me configure it to concentrate on a section of questions, as opposed to a random group of questions. It is a pay site however. - Jim

  If you want to see radios you might go to TEXAS TOWERS in Richardson. There are many places that sell radios on the internet. www.hamcity.com www.gigaparts.com www.aesham.com just to name a few. As far as study material, many like the W5YI books - http://www.w5 yi.org/catalog.php?sort=2 Also you might check out www.hamtestonline.com that is how I studied for my Extra class. Hope this helps. Also check out our website for more info. We will have a club meeting this coming Tuesday night.
