An ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates is considered to be the father of western medicine. The Hippocratic Oath, a code of ethics taken by doctors which instructs to ’First do no harm,’ remains a part of his legacy. Additionally, in his practice and instruction, Hippocrates emphasized the importance of diet, lifestyle, patient care and the healing power of nature. These Hippocratic principles are in fact, the foundations of holistic medicine, whose healing practices are based on the following tenets:
That we are of nature. That we recover from and resist disease best when our lifestyles and healing methods remain as close to nature as possible.
That life exists as an integration of systems, and that we must approach it holistically.
That disease is conquered most effectively by promoting the body’s inherent ability to resist the external factors that influence illness.
That health is impacted most effectively by treating the individual as an integrated whole rather than as an amalgam of unrelated conditions.
The goal at Hippocrates is to eliminate the symptoms of disease by fortifying and optimizing the defense mechanisms that maintain health. The result of this approach is an increase in energy, vitality, and well-being--the cornerstones upon which full lives are made.
Does anyone know of a psycho-therapist who specializes in people with chronic illnesses like Lupus? Bonus points for someone who has a more holistic approach. Must be likeable. Any referrals would be greatly appreciated!
