I was thinking of doing a white undercoat to give it the brightest shade of red we can get. Am I right, or is there any other tips anyone can give me?

If so just apply the red straight to the new plaster don't put a coat of white on first as reds and yellows don't have much body in there paint and would take a few coats of red to cover the White
