Rentacheapie is a scam. While they make it look like there rates are lower, they make up for it by charging you for ludicrous scratch charges. They require a R 5900 deposit, and say you are only liable up to that amount. We had the car for 24 hours, and were charged almost R 1600 for a one centimeter scratch on the side of the bumper. Honestly, we never even felt contact on that part of the car, and their rep said, “Oh ya, you wouldn’t even feel something that tiny.” If you look on their website you’ll find their price list for repair costs. If you happen to get a door scratch less than 5cm: R 2297. It should have been a red flag when their representative spent 20 minutes circling the car detailing every micro scratch on the car before having us sign the agreement. It was clear that he setting us up for being responsible for every new little dent.
However, that’s not even the full story of our first and only rental from this company. We took the car out on a Saturday morning with a plan to bring it back on Tuesday. On Sunday morning we rolled the window down and it got stuck and we couldn’t roll it back up. We immediately called the roadside help number. Not being able to park and leave the car with the window down, we waited in a parking lot for an hour for someone to show up. When they did arrive, they didn’t have the right tool to take off the door panel. 30 minutes after struggling with the wrong tools, he realized the mechanism was shot and he would not be able to get the window up. The company would not have another car to replace ours with until Monday morning. At this point we asked to cancel the rest of our reservation and have them come retrieve their car.
When the rep came an hour later, he did a walk around and found two new marks on the vehicle. One of them I contested as just being sunscreen, and I was able to rub it off. Really, he was going to charge me for it? Ok, he said, just the one new scratch. I asked how much it would be and he said he had no idea. So we called his manager, who quoted me R 1000 for the 1 cm scratch. I thought this was a ridiculous amount, but didn’t know what recourse we had. Ultimately, we agreed to the following: 1) they would refund us two full days for the faulty vehicle, and would only charge us for Saturday; 2) charge us R 1000 for the bumper; and 3) charge us for the petrol refuel. We wrote this down and signed it, and he said he would call us Monday morning and that we would receive the invoice Monday morning. Of course, none of this gave us the three hours of our Sunday back.
Monday morning came and went and I didn’t hear or receive anything. I called at noon and was told he would call me back. He never called back and I didn’t receive an invoice. However, I did get a new charge on my credit card statement! I called back Tuesday and after two hours called back again. They finally sent the receipt. However, the receipt showed a charge of R 1597 instead the R 1000 I was quoted over the phone. The guy that had quoted me R 1000 was now telling me I had misheard and that he had never said R 1000. His rep had even written down R 1000, so really just flat out dishonesty about what he had said on Sunday. They have refused to refund the R 597 and uphold the agreement we made on Sunday.
I’m now more well read on these “scratch scam” rental companies as a result of this incident, and would strongly advise anyone in Cape Town against Rentacheapie. Shady business model built on taking as much as possible from deposit, shady ethics in dealing with customers.
Urgent courtesy car needed I need to drive an abused dog to a rehabilitation center from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth by Saturday morning. Yesterday, I booked and paid through a rental car company online but today they advised me that they are canceling because there’s no availability. Can you please recommend a car hire company I can try that might have something available?
