Pub crawl Will be coming to Sheffield one Saturday in April for a pub crawl in honour of a 40th birthday. Arriving by train around lunchtime. Will be doing a pub/ale tour of (hopefully) a good selection of Sheffield’s best pubs.
As a group we are into real ale and unspoilt, old school, traditional boozers. Prepared to walk fair distances and maybe take taxis if there are some must-see great backstreet locals hidden outside the central area. Looking to hit around 10-12 pubs.
Suggestions? Have got these places pencilled in already:
Kelham Island Tavern
fat cat
Devonshire cat
Rutland arms
Shakespeare
Fagans
Bath Hotel
Dog and partridge
Grapes
Red deer
I realise that Sheffield has an embarrassment of riches in this area!

Start here if you're arriving by train http://www.sheffieldtap.com/ The boozer is in the train station, but don't let that put you off. It's a good place to meet up if you're waiting for others in your party. Looks like you've got all the decent alehouses covered in your list. Get to Dev Cat early if you want a seat and if there's a lot of you. It's got bouncers as the night progresses - I'm not sure of their policy of letting large groups in, but the guys on the door there are pretty chill. Can recommend the food in Red Deer (as well as the beer, obviously!).

You can start at the Sheffield Tap that is in the train station, one of the biggest ale selections in Sheff and has a micro brewery in the back room. When you are in Kelham Island (Kelham Island Tavern, Fat Cat) the also check out Gardeners Rest. Its a bit further out than the other two but very much on your vibe. Also the Harlequin which is on the other end Kelham Island is OK. Go to Cutlery Works food hall in Kelham Island for lunch, its very modern but has an amazing choice of indiependent stalls. There is also a beer stall upstairs....this is close to the Gardners Rest so you can combine the two.

Here is my route around Kelham Island: 1. Gardener's Rest 1. Riverside (maybe skip nowadays but I do it because I sort of have a tradition and they do food) 1. The Harlequin 1. The Fat Cat 1. The Kelham Island Tavern 1. Shakespeare's 1. (optional, bit wanky these days) The Ship 1. The Wellington@shalesmoor Bar those two I mentioned they are all what you are after. Good ones in town: - Sheffield Tap - The Three Tuns - The Red Deer - Fagans - The Bath Hotel
