BOSTON area friends: Anybody know a great wedding band?
Tony G. replied:
If you want to bring a band up from NYC, I highly recommend Uptown Swing part of 3 bands under the Uptown Swing office. http://www.nycswing.com/ with guitarist Mick Gafney and bassist Jeff Ganz in the rhythm section, great singers including Sinatra impersonator extraordinaire Tony Babino! I've recently joined the horn section which includes trombonist John Hahn and saxophonist Ken Gioffre. Showcase is coming up at SIR studios on Oct.10 th at SIR studios NYC if you're interested. I'm certain you've also heard of Starlight Orchestras who are also quite good. If you prefer a local Boston band, Tony Kadleck, Kenny Rampton, Todd Schwartz, Bill Mobley, Bruce Eidem, Gary Valente, Dave Mann and even Joe Cohn and myself all played in what was then the Ed, Bill and Bo Winiker Swing Orchestra while living in Boston. They still have great musicians young and old today (usually finding the best young ones at nearby Berklee or NEC)! They have great swing/big band jazz oriented bands, but also do a decent amount of top 40, the NY bands would probably hold an edge in that category as bands like NYC Swing tend to do a more contemporary repertoire and Motown tunes way better, but also can still do the standards quite well. So basically it depends on what you think you and your guests will like best. Check some videos and choose accordingly. Trumpeter Trent Austin might also have some great local recommendations. Good luck!
