The highlights for beer lovers (rather than pub spotters) will be the Ale House, The Nags Head and the Greyfriars although the Castle Tap isn't too bad. I would suggest Ale House - Castle Tap - Nags - Greyfriars with maybe a look in Pavlovs Dog / Zerodegrees for a contrast. Cross Country direct train from Bournemouth goes at 09:06 due in at 11:03, if you use other services it will involve some road travel between Eastleigh and Basingstoke.

  I used to live & work in Reading, can I recommend the Sweeney & Todd. http://www.sweeneyandtodd.co.uk/ Terrific pies but their beer isn't bad either.

  There is Sweeney Todds pie shop (http://www.sweeneyandtodd.co.uk/) where they have had the xmas do the last few years. Really cheap and people seem to like it.
