Recommendations for French restaurants in the $30/40 range. I grew up going to to La Boulangerie on Geary and ever since that closed, I've been looking for a suitable replacement. The escargots, rack of lamb, and price point just couldn't be beat. Thinking bout taking Mom to somewhere nice for early Mom's day.
EDIT: had chouchou, rue lepic, and chapeau in mind so far.
EDIT2: also, do you guys remember la boulange on geary? its used to be where dancing bull is now.

[L'Ardoise](http://www.ardoisesf.com/)!! It's a cozy little neighborhood place. The food is amazing and the staff is so insanely wonderful and kind. I celebrated my birthday there many years ago and they secretly worked with my family back on the East Coast to make it a really memorable night.

Starbucks closed La Boulange after buying them, but La Boulangerie was started by the same founder and is very similar (if fewer locations). You're going to have a hard time getting away with a meal for less than $40 at a white-napkin place because SF costs have gone up so much.
As a Frenchman in SF I can recommend Fringale (4th & Brannan) basque cusine, very reasonably priced for the quality and Plouf (Belden Lane near Kearny & Bush): love their moule-frites. Chez Marius on 24th & Noe is also quite good. Petit Crenn is outstanding and not too expensive for brunch. I used to go to what's known as Cocotte when I lived on Nob Hill, it was very good and reasonably priced, I don't know about now. Le Central on Bush & Kearny is very traditional and excellent (Willie Brown goes there).
Chouchou in Forest Hill is quite mediocre and the service unpleasant. Le P'tit Laurent has a very good yet cheap neighborhood menu, but they have a distressing habit of closing early, they cancelled 3 reservations of mine that way.
L'Ardoise, Mathilde, Monsieur Benjamin and Café Claude are good but somewhat overpriced. Rue Lepic, Zazie, Baker Street Bistro, Gaspar, Aquitaine are solid. Jeanne d'Arc is good but the décor is exceedingly odd.
A very nice friend from Chicago is in town, and I need to know a good place to go for dinner in SF that is (1) not too expensive, (2) close to downtown (alamo square?), (3) makes San Francisco look good.
Any suggestions?

L' Ardoise at 151 Noe Street? See http://www.ardoisesf.com/ for menus and prices. It's a Noe and Henry, right in the middle of a leafy and quiet residential neighborhood. Chef is Thierry Clement, ex- of Fringale and Le Charm. Dinner without drinks around $40 per person. It's a lovely place...
