  You should stick with Canon or Nikon. Both are great. I would buy new and get the warranty. I have sent both my camera and lens in several time for free. I just ordered a new lens from DigitalMonster.com and highly recommend them. All of their customer service reps are photographers...super helpful. I would go a step above the Rebel line but don't feel like you need to go all the way to the high end line either. I will try and tag you a blog post that covers this topic. Last thing, the lens really is more important than the camera body. Just depends on how much you want to spent, if you just plan on shooting on auto, etc.
