Flying to New York, looking for an affordable hostel. So my SO and I are going to New York for our anniversary, and we're searching around for a place to stay the night. My idea was to find a hostel near a subway entrance outside of the main city, trying to avoid the cash suck that I'm sure Manhattan is. Anyone out there done this before? Got any tips or tricks to save on a place to crash in the Big Apple?
We're flying into La Guardia, but plan on spending most of our time hopping around the area and just taking in sights and people.

I stayed at the [new york loft hostel in brooklyn](http://www.nylofthostel.com/), not too far from the subway. I went with my sister and now brother-in-law - I stayed in the dorm and they stayed in a private room, worked out great, plus a pretty good free breakfast. edit: changed husband to brother-in-law. He's not my husband!
Friends who have been to New York (so everyone but me, I guess) do you recommend any good/cheap hostels or know of any good gluten free bakeries I can hit up?
Thank you

A lot of friends have stayed here, good vibes in a cool part of east w.burg/bushwick, they do free bbq's in summer - maybe in winter too!? http://www.nylofthostel.com/
Can anyone recommend a decent hostel in NY? I'm heading over at the end of this month and was just wondering if there are any hostels that people would recommend.
Thanks!

I stayed here. http://www.nylofthostel.com/ It's in Brooklyn but is very close to the subway, cheap, clean, and has helpful staff.
