WALK IN REGISTRATION IS STILL AVAILABLE.** **10% discount for TLC students/grads** Providing targeted, effective, and safe massage therapy is the focus of the Massage for Special Needs course. From cognitive disorders such as Autism, to physical disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, this course will give participants revealing insight in to the most common special needs, how to safely work with this unique clientele; as well as how to develop, implement and measure an effective treatment plan. Chris Allan will share definitions and characteristics for the most commonly encountered special needs, with a more in-depth look in to Autism and Cerebral Palsy. The course will begin with an overview of proper biomechanics and safety, covering topics like how to transfer a client in a wheelchair to a bed or massage table. This will be followed by a comprehensive discussion of Indications and Contraindications. Achieving the desired outcomes for each client begins with a well developed treatment plan targeted to the client’s individual needs and challenges, both physical and cognitive. Goals set forth in the plan should be realistic, designed to achieve the desired outcome, and measurable. This course will teach students about each of the critical components of a treatment plan and how to get started. Near the conclusion of the course, therapists will apply the knowledge gained by utilizing some of the integrative massage techniques. These techniques address pathology and can be easily added to one’s massage toolkit. Therapists will leave the session more knowledgeable about special needs populations and how to address their unique issues in order to produce the most effective outcome for each individual. Christopher Allan is a massage therapist, massage therapy instructor, and business owner serving the special needs community in Texas. Chris is a 2001 graduate of the Lauterstein Conway School of Massage and has served as an adjunct instructor for many years. Chris founded Health Care Therapies in 2003. With a focus on improving lives through positive touch, Health Care Therapies has steadily grown as a leading provider of massage therapy to clients with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and other special needs throughout the Austin and Dallas/Ft. Worth areas. When not managing his business or spending time with his wife and young son, Chris enjoys outdoor sports, gardening and pursuing his love of music.
