I am looking for a dog for pet therapy in central jersey.. can anyone recommend a agency or person that would visit our nursing home?
Leah W. replied:
If you go to therapy dogs ...and email them..they will email members near you www.therapydogs.com
Traci P. replied:
Therapy dog international. Contact them and they will send you their info. And application. Go on line to get contact info. All therapy dogs.
Traci P. replied:
I prefer therapy dog international or something similar. they are certified pet therapy dogs not a dog from a shelter that you don't know their temperament. Safer route to go for sure

Hi - I have a 6 month old Golden Retriever in Charlotte, NC that I would like to make a Therapy Dog once she is old enough. Is there a training I need to put them through?
Alliance D. replied:
Training is always a good idea as it promotes bonding, good manners and socialization. Having said that, No! It is not required to have any formal classes. We look for a well mannered, social dog who is non-aggressive towards humans or other dogs. Check out our website for more information at www.therapydogs.com
I know I have asked this question before but Im looking for the info on therapy dogs...specifically how to get our little buddy into being one- since he's so awesome, we want to share the love! :-) Thanks in advance!
Patricia T. replied:
Please note that TDI (Therapy Dogs International) and TDInc Therapy Dogs Incorporated) are different groups/different tests. www.therapydogs.com

We are certified through Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs and did a 6 week class at Heavenly Hounds in Lawrenceville with Trish Baker
Nancy S. replied:
I've certified my dogs through Therapy Dogs International. The criteria are listed on their website. No formal training needed - you just need a well behaved dog that follows your commands. Good luck!

Are there any reputable therapy dog trainers/classes in Kentucky? Would like to learn as much as possible before getting the dog to train in the first place. Don't want to mess anything up. Willing to pay top dollar for the guidance as well. Any advice is appreciated this will be my first therapy dog and I am very excited! Please no negative comments. Thank you!
Lisa E. replied:
therapydogs.com has all the info for the process.

In my opinion breed has nothing to do with it. I applaud your vision of shining a favorable light on the pitbull breed. However it is also my opinion that therapy dogs are born not made. You can train any dog to be obedient with the right amount of wor k, but you cannot train them to have that natural love for all human contact and a brave personality. I would familiarize yourself with temperment testing and select a dog that you think will fit the bill. Please do not be disappointed however if in the end you end up with a great buddy who just wasn't meant to do therapy work. Good luck on your journey.

I have a deaf Dane who is TDI certified. We rescued him when he was 5 months old and began taking him to basic puppy classes as soon as he was well enough. We continued training with the same trainer and she also administered the TDI test. You don't have to take a class, just pass the test. This is my first therapy dog but my 4 th Dane. I don't think my others would have been good therapy dogs. They were wonderful pets but some dogs just have something special. Does anyone else feel the same way?
Has any one ever considered having their Dane trained as a therapy dog? I was considering it but not sure how to go about it. We live in NC right now. Any ideas or suggestions?

Our dane is a therapy dog. He's great at it...and for the most part people love him! (Some people are scared bc of his size, but once they meet him they love him) Therapy dogs incorporated is a great source ;-)
Laurie M. replied:
My dane/lab and my lab/border collie are both therapy dogs at the local schools special ed classes and we love it. Because of the Danes size some kids are afraid initially but that usually goes away pretty quickly. Its pretty cool to see the tiny pre-k...See More

Loretta M. replied:
You can have a dog trained as a therapy/companion dog... http://www.therapydogs.com/ Its not the same as a service dog. Calm down, I understand the laws, but by getting your dog certified as a therapy dog more places will accept your dog despite the breed. Therapy Dogs Inc. www.therapydogs.com Therapy Dogs Inc. is a national organization with its corporate office located i...n Cheyenne, WY. TDInc. was incorporated in the year 1990. Currently we have 12,000+ handler/dog teams in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories.See More
Carrie H. replied:
Loretta, yes, you can have your dog trained, but it isn't required by law, like a service dog is (by definition). And as long as you understand that therapy dogs have no legal rights to housing, public access or under ACAA for travel, we're good. If they want to grant you an exception, that's that individual business's decision. They also have the right to say No.
I am doing a course where I have to learn more about pat dogs, guide dogs, therapy dogs and hearing dogs. Does anyone know of any good sites that they could refer me too? I will be doing a google...
Hi Julie, I have had 3 Therapy Dogs with Therapy Dogs Inc http://www.therapydogs.com/ I also raised 3 Guide Dogs for the Blind http://www.guidedogs.com/ If you do a google search quite a few Therapy Dog groups will come up and the same is true of the Guide Dog organizations. I would be glad to answer any specific questions if you contact me privately. Joanne Johnson

Hi - does anyone know if there is a problem with the website? We are trying to renew and as instructed in our packet going online to www.therapydogs.com but we are getting a message that this website is not correct and we are advised not to continue. Our deadline is July 1 and we are traveling on the 1st and wont be back until the 6th so I need to get this done by the 30th. Any suggestions?

I would like to get information in how to have my dog become certified. I live in Central Virginia. Can you help me find information on classes and other information?
Therapy I. replied:
Lisa, thanks for your interest in TDInc.! Check out our website at www.therapydogs.com and choose "How to Become a Member" from the right hand side. You will be able to review the test and what is required of you and your dog to be a registered team. A class is not required, but you may find a tester/observer in your area who offers a class. Scroll to the bottom of the how to become a member page and choose your state from the drop-down menu to find people close to your location. Please also know that therapy dogs are never certified, but they are registered. Let us know if you have any more questions!
I live in Rapid City, SD. I am interested in my dog doing therapy work. Where do I get connected with someone to get some more info on the process? Thank you
Therapy I. replied:
Bonny, unfortunately we do not have any testers in Rapid City! We have lots of testers in Wyoming and Colorado. Check out the options at the bottom of the "how to become a member" page to see if there is a tester/observer near you. http://www.therapydogs.com/Become_A_Member.aspx If there is not a T/O near you, please contact our home office and one of the wonderful ladies there will instruct you on how to be tested 877-843-7364
Can you please message me information on how I can get my dog certified? Is there someone near the Sacramento Area that can do the testing?
Therapy I. replied:
Bridget, Therapy Dogs Incorporated is a therapy dog registry. TDInc. registers the handler/dog team and screens potential teams to be registered as having met a minimum of requirements for registration. You can find out more about How to Become a Member here - http://www.therapydogs.com/Become_A_Member.aspx including contacts in your area. And, you can also call the TDInc. office at 877-843-7364 for more information. We look forward to having you and your dog joining us soon!!!
