Sharice S. asked:I had a horrible experience happen to me today. I was walking my dog this morning and a little girl was walking hers as well. Now my dog does not like other dogs, so we walked very quickly to get as far away from this dog as possible. However the little girl (about 5) ended up running up behind us with the dog and I yelled to her to stop because my dog didn't like dogs. Next thing I know her dog is loose and runs up to my dog and my dog attacked the dog grabbing it by its neck. I could not get my dog to let go of this dog and it was horrifying!! I had to yell to get a landscaper to help me and she finally let go after about 2 mins. The dog was bleeding, but did run off. I then went to the owners house and told him what happened and was crying and so upset and he had not even looked at the dog yet as it was under their couch. He didn't even realize how bad the situation was apparently. So even though I know my dog was leashed properly, I am still feeling so bad about what happened with the the other dog and I am thinking about muzzling my dog while on walks. Does anyone have a recommendation for a muzzle and also is there a way to break up these attacks if this were to happen again? I have never once laid a hand on my dog, but I did today to try and stop her from essentially killing this dog. It did nothing to make her let go. I would also appreciate if anyone knows of a trainer that can help with this as well. There are two kids, and the parents work full time. In the past, we have tried a thunder shirt and Prozac. Neither does much good. In the shelter environment, she is FINE and doesn't show any signs of anxiety. Maybe because of the other dogs? Trainers out there, any ideas? The family is worried about how stressed out she is when they're not home. They plan to reinforce the crate so she can't break out and possibly have a neighbor take her for a walk at lunch time. A plastic crate should be used but the key is to change the behavior in the crate by addressing the separation anxiety and relationship with the crate.

We are meeting tonight for another meet and greet and I would love to share some insight so she has a better idea of what training might be needed. I wonder if any trainers or animal lovers have suggestions for us as we move forward. What have others seen in their work with fearful/reactive dogs? Have you seen obedience classes make a difference or would we need to consider more of a one-on-one trainer situation. Are there any trainers that offer free or discounted advice (or even a training session) to rescue/foster dogs? I have some names from my fellow MCACC volunteers of recommended trainers but would certainly love to find as many options as possible. Lastly, what tools or training methods have you used to help socialize? I don't want to fail my sweet boy by not sharing things that might help her make an informed decision.
