I've also got a blog/website (willowtreecopyediting.wordpress.com), I'm on LinkedIn, and I'm a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (the-efa.org). My profile can be viewed at both LinkedIn and the EFA by doing a search for my name. So, all that said, what type of editing is your friend looking for? Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with graphic design or e-book formats. If that's what's needed, I can see if the editors I talk with here on FB are interested, or your friend can post a listing on the EFA jobs board. Tammy Jo, that's a good point. I don't know of any editors offhand who ask for complete payment up front, though many do ask for half. There are some who will do a free sample of a few pages (I'm one of those), and others who charge a low fee for the sample. Either way, that's a good way to find someone who will mesh well with the author.

Rob M. replied:For Kristina Stancil, this reply may not be applicable, but for others who might happen upon this thread it may be. Remember, Hemingway said all first drafts are shite. Hemingway was right (though I'm sure there's some genius out there who'd disagree). With first, and even subsequent early drafts, an artist is putting their clay on the table. There's nothing worse for a writer than a blank page, but once that clay is there, the basic structure in place, then the writer can really get to work and apply craft! Some writers recoil at the thought of revision. This is a mistake. Revision is a friend to be embraced. Revision is the exercise of the mechanical imagination! Moving on ... yes, there can be a need for editorial help with an early project, especially if a writer's strapped for time, and say ... hmm ... needs structural assistance, or an objective eye towards developing a proper throughline (or a snazzy improper one that will later be adjusted) or help with plotting, or cutting some cast members and making some composite characters. Sure. Often, though (but again, probably not in Ms. Stancil's case), writers are looking for validation, for someone other than friends-or-fam to say: Yeah, I can see the potential here, and it's strong. When this is the case, there are cheaper ways of getting mentored and getting that needed validation. Editing can cost a mint (though the editors mentioned in this thread are quite reasonable, of not an outright steal!). To take a look at what so-called "real" professional editorial rates are, check out the following link: http://www.the-efa.org/res/rates.php There's any number of live and virtual writing groups, magazines, and books on the craft that should be consulted and utilized by developing writers who're cutting their teeth. I've seen writers with dresser drawer mss. hire editors for several hundred dollars only to receive generic advice, of the type that can be found in any year's collection of "Writer's Digest" magazine. With William Cook, an author I'm familiar with, were not dealing with a beginner who's got that magical X-factor that all good writers need to have, but with a practiced writer and storyteller, someone with an eye that'll be able to detect whether or not an editor is bullshitting or otherwise taking advantage of a prospective client. For those starting out, I suggest leaving editors alone for a bit and simply working on putting down words--and a lot of them. As for validation, yes, sometimes editors are cheerleaders, and that's not a bad thang. I love telling clients not only what I think might help with a work, but also what rocks within a story, what has made me laugh or cry, or has even worked to bring my own writing to a new level. On the other hand, for anyone out there who deals with doubt--get over it. We all have had to deal with it, and will probably have to deal with it again. Not too many years ago, King was considering retirement, his fear being that he'd written all he could and that he'd rather go out on top than exit the stage just recycling previous ideas and characters. This was pre "Duma Key," "Under the Dome," and other stories. If King can have some doubt, well, the lesson's clear. And so is this truth. If a person loves to write (or perhaps even hates it, but can't quit), they don't actually need validation--even though it sure don't hurt. They need persistance and flight time. All my best, Rob M.
