We don't want to stay in a hotel or high-rise condo; we'd prefer a cottage/house/studio/similar that has its own kitchen. We'll have a rental car while we're there. If there are options nearby for child-friendly activities (hiking, for example), that would be great. Also, does anyone know of places that do horseback riding for kids (age 6)?   Definitely check out the sidebar for more recommendations, but if you let us know what area you're going to be visiting, I'm sure many posters here have some good recommendations for child-friendly activities. I mentioned briefly below, but reiterating in case you miss that post, Hanauma Bay is a popular site to visit for snorkeling on the East side of Oahu. Sea Life Park is also a very kid-friendly location on that side - dolphin shows and various exhibits, including a pretty fun touching zoo of sea critters that I remember enjoying as a kid (depending on age, I guess - you mentioned 6 so I think that would be good). In central Oahu, there is the Dole Cannery maze, which is converted from an old pineapple field. I think it's the largest hedge maze in the country or something like that... pretty cool to run around, and Dole Whip (pineapple icecream/sorbet dessert) is delicious. Probably will mostly be centered around Waikiki, but I'd recommend trolling Groupon/Livingsocial/Hot Deals Hawaii and trying to get a good deal on group surfing lessons or something like that - maybe paddle board? Even pretty young kids can be adept at the water sports, and I mean... it's Hawaii, you are going to want to spend time at the beach. XD Horseback I think was covered - Kualoa ranch is definitely the place. It's a gorgeous site in general, and the movie scenes are pretty cool, I think. While you're in that general direction, there are lots of great places to see on the North Shore - you'll be in the wrong season for the big surf, but Waimea Beach is still very beautiful, and Haleiwa is a nice place to stop by for the day. The farmer's market up there is one of the best on the island. Have fun :)
