  I researched this a few years back and it's super interesting. Garn http://www.garn.com/ makes the best wood fired boiler systems but they are very expensive. Learn how the Garn works and then figure out what compromises you can live with. Cooling a firebox with water makes combustion terribly inefficient. To compensate for this you need to extract the heat after the burn from the exhaust which creates creosote which is also bad. To compensate for this Garn uses a refractory burn chamber that is basically a forge which burns everything including the smoke particles. They also use a blower to push the exhaust gas through a series of large radiator tubes which extract the heat. When the exaust gas leaves the system it's basically just a little bit of steam and luke warm air. They also use a really large and well insulated water source to store the heat from the burn. With enough water storage you could heat several little houses from one central boiler building.
