  In my experience, own root roses are healthier, and you don't have to worry about protecting the graft when it really freezes. The Antique Rose Emporium carries a bunch of David Austin roses that aren't grafted. I haven't had a ton of luck with Austin roses in this climate, to be honest. They were bred for England, and so their growth habits and health tend to be different here, and I am not willing to spray or water a ton to have a decent looking plant. That said, I've grown Graham Thomas, which was very healthy and grew well, but would throw off awkward long shoots that only flowered at the ends. It'd probably be best grown as a pillar rose or a climber where you could train the canes horizontally to encourage more bud breaks and more flowering. I've also grown Abraham Darby, which had absolutely spectacular flowers and a mindblowing intense citrusy fragrance, but the bush constantly had blackspot and also huge thorns and an ugly form. I got rid of it in a fit of pique. I just got another on its own roots from the Antique Rose Emporium to see whether it'd be a healthier, happier plant, so we shall see. There are a few roses that I grow that have a more classic rose shape and fragrance like the Austin roses and also do well here and are easy to find at local nurseries: Duchesse de Brabant, Mrs B.R. Cant, and Souvenir de la Malmaison. If you decide to go with David Austin roses, could you report back with how they do for you?

  I have seven or eight own root roses from Antique Rose Emporium that are doing great despite complete neglect by me. Also have a mutabilis in my front yard that was a transplant from my back yard and took off - also completely ignored by me.
