  Anyone regularly use a Top Quilt when they are on the ground? I'm a Scout leader who hammocks as much as possible, but in some cases we are assigned a site where that's not possible and I sometimes have to go to plan B and breakout the tent. I'm looking for a top quilt I could use that would double as a sleeping bag replacement. I'm also a wider guy (too much dutch oven cobbler) so I'd probably be looking for something that takes that into account. Any suggestions from the assembled wisdom here about what brands are good, affordable, etc? Any best practices to keep drafts away? Thanks in advance!

  Hammock gear and loco libre have budget line. Just make sure you get it in wide for the ground for these two brands.

  Any of hammock cottage vendors that do quilts would be excellent. They all run near $300 range for extra long and wide and are top notch. When you order look for pad straps and attachments and add those to your order. You could also email them and discuss that you need a quilt for ground sleeping and they will help you order exactly what you need. In case you don't know the vendors I'll name a few and I'm sure others will name the ones I miss.... UGQ (my personal favorite), Hammock Gear, Jack's R Better, Loco Libre, Enlightened Equipment

  Absolutely go for Hammock Gear. You won't find a better value out there than the Econ Burrow line. Make sure you get the wider version for ground sleeping.

  Yes, there's a whole bunch of people on r/Ultralight and elsewhere who use quilts on the ground. They can get kinda pricey, there are some affordable ones but you pay the price in weight which may or may not matter to you. Look around online, cottage dealers will charge you more, there are probably diy kits on ripstopbytheroll.com, I think rei has some quilts. Check used gear places if you want something nicer but can't afford one new. I made my quilts out of Costco down throws, spent $40 and two days of prep and sewing. I modded two of them, each weigh 1lb. Both can take me below 30f, one can take me down to about 50f. Not the lightest things on the planet and they do shed a ton of down, but they were cheap and they work. As for drafts, Enlightened Equipment makes some straps that go around your pad and clip to your quilt to keep it secure around you. I put the clips on my quilts but have never used them since I'm not as big around and can do a pretty decent job of tucking the quilt around me.

  They must be the dessert tan color, no other color is allowed. You can go to military gear.com and look there. That's where we bought ours from last year. As we never purchased boot dryers, I'm sure others will comment. Welcome to the family.
