pupperseh asked:[Urgent] Can anyone recommend a virtual dog trainer for behavior modification? My son was born 4 days ago and our three dogs have been doing great with him. Unfortunately my German shepherd tends to be a bit hyper and nervous around my husband, and my husband is now afraid that she’s going to knock him over while he’s walking around with our son in his arms. My husband wants to rehome the shepherd for the safety of our son, saying that we won’t have time to train her out of it, but since there are no other issues (shepherd is very sweet otherwise), he’s agreed to look at possible solutions first. Because of COVID, we can only do virtual training. Can anyone recommend one who does virtual behavior modification? TIA

She lives in Cadillac Michigan, and she says they'd be able to travel about an hour to see a trainer. So if any of you have any good ideas on trainers in the area, we'd both appreciate it greatly! That will allow them to drink and pant just fine, just not hurt each other. Then I would definitely get a behaviorist to come to your house. Training in a facility is beneficial, but you need more in depth training from the sounds of it. Until you find the right behaviorist, read up on resource guarding and multi-dog households on positively.com and dogstardaily.com to get you on the right track. I would check out the list of behaviorists on APDT.com.

He obviously is very high energy and loves to play and is pretty high maintenance. Recently he has been getting kind of mean to strange people and dogs. Thanks!!!Antje S. replied:not all dogs have the capacity to just be integrated 'into a pack', nor should they be. without gradual desensitization training/assessment of stimulus/triggers, and in the hands of the wrong trainer, especially "dominance theory" trainers, (who offer this more than others) this can end up producing a reactive dog. I personally have never offered these kind of programs at my facility in my 12 years as a trainer specializing in behavior. these programs typically do not produce lasting results a 'average dog owner' can replicate. you can find licensed and certified +R trainers on www.APDT.com Jonathan Klein in Culver City is great & he might have the proper set up for gradual socialization to be escalated w/multiple dogs. you can Google him. tell him I sent you.

I looked up trainers in my area off of www.apdt.com I also went to area shelter and just started taking dogs out and observing dogs in play groups. Along with taking courses from apdt and online learning courses. Talked to area trainers, the ones I liked that used science based training and those that used positive reinforcement. I was surprised at how generous they were to help me. Finally went with an online training course that too into account both learning theory, ethology and start up business info. I became a member of APDT right away and got tons of info, courses etc. Any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me! Good Luck!

Most gun dog training is very heavy on the punishment spectrum...shock collars are considered basic gundog equipment...not recommended. He is in the worst age range right now where all behaviors are extreme and he s eemingly isn't learning. It will peak at 10 months and then gradually get better. He will not be out of adolescence until 18 months ish. I would also explore other obedience trainers in your area www.petprofessionalguild.com www.ccpdt.org www.apdt.com that might be a better fit. He needs lots of impulse control work...waits (for food, play, doorways, ect), leave-it, tug and drop, there are other games you can play as well to help with that impulse control. I also recommend Leslie McDevitts Control Unleashed for impulse control as well. Shaping games are great for mind work, get a tricks book and teach him a new trick every week, feed out of food puzzles and training sessions...he needs his brain worked most,a chance to relieve pent up energy with frequent free play breaks in a secured area, and structured house rules. You will need wine and chocolate wink emoticon
