My sisters dog has damage to her kidneys and the vet has recommended a low protein diet , anyone out there got any good recommendations for a complete food . Thanks

I'm surprised that the vet recommended low protein. Low phosphorus yes, but a dog still needs a normal level of good quality protein iirc. I can't copy the link to the specific page but dogaware.com summarises and details studies on the subject. Low protein seems to be rather old school thinking. Of course I'm not a vet and the vet in question may be aware of that but have other reasons for the recommendation. It may jutst be that low phosphorus is more easily found in low protein diets.

Here's a website with some basics: dogaware.com It is written by a canine nutrition researcher and the info is solid!
To all the raw feeders in the group. I'm not raw feeding yet but considering it. But not until I know exactly how to give my dogs a balanced diet and do it right. What's the best resource for me to start out slow? And do you think I can do part Raw and part kibble effectively? Do you guys give your dog's cooked meat as well? I'm not sure I can go 100% raw... I live in Sonoma County California. Do you guys know of a good place I can get raw food that isn't straight from the grocery store? And don't you guys worry about them getting parasites etc? I know I wouldn't eat raw meat so I worry about giving it to them.... Signed, The Newbie

Here is another very good resrouce: www.dogaware.com It's a lot to take in, but she is very good at explaining choices, moving slowly to raw or home cooked, which books are best, etc.

Ditto what Lynne said. What Vet do you go to? You might want to get a second opinion. Why can't they treat the symptoms with diet and supplements instead of doing additional testing? http://dogaware.com/health/liver.htmlDogAware.com Health: Liver Disease in Dogs dogaware.com Disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian, nor do I have any formal training in any me...dical field. Beth, Check out www.dogaware.com and see if there are any answer for you there. Polly Lewis at Carriage House in Kasson will work with you even though she in a traditional vet. She's very open to alternative and will read any information that you bring her and she'll tell you when she doesn't know something instead of pretending she knows it all. I know there are a few naturopathic-holistic vets in the twin cities area and I'm sure someone else on the list can help you out. Shalise

I recall a small company led by veterinarians that helped owners develop an individual diet for their dog based on the dog's health and breed and other factors. I thought it was based in the Bay Area, but I could be wrong. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Suggestions for other nutrition services you've heard about or had experience with are also appreciated!
